The Summerville & District Fire Department is an all volunteer fire department located in Hants County. The Department was formed in June of 1963 to serve the communities of Summerville, Kempt Shore, Cheverie, Bramber, Cogmagun, Riverside, Lower and Center Burlington with a coverage area of 220 square km and approximately 1000 residents.
The department has an active membership of 27 Firefighters, 2 junior and 10 Veterans members which include 1 Chief, 1 Deputy Chief, 2 Captains and 2 Lieutenants. The Department currently responds to approximately 100-150 calls per year and currently provides services of fire, rescue, medical first response, water rescue, ice rescue and vehicle extrication.
The Summerville Fire Department has the following apparatus: Pumper 1 with Hurst Edraulics, Vacuum Tanker 2, Pumper/Tanker 3 with Hurst High pressure rescue tools, Rescue 4, Summerville ATV equipped with Mattracks and Little Red Wagon Two personnel/rescue transport, and Summerville Water Rescue Craft (Zodiac Pro 9).
The Department, when called upon, has the capability to act as an Emergency Comfort Shelter for 150 or more people in times of need. The department receives funding through the West Hants Regional Municipality and its many fundraising initiatives.
