The featured fire department of the week for the week of June 25, 2023 – July 2, 2023 is the Barrington/Port LaTour Fire Department located in Shelburne County.
The Barrington/Port LaTour Fire Department is one of 12 fire departments located in Shelburne County and are 1 of 3 fire departments that make up the Barrington Municipal Fire & Emergency Services. The fire department was founded in 2014 after unification of the Barrington, Port La Tour and Port Clyde fire departments.
The department currently has a total of 30 members. Of the 30 members, 3 are fire chiefs which are as followed… Fire Chief Paul Thomas, Deputy Fire Chief Craig Hutchinson and Deputy Fire Chief Arthur Doane. They also have 3 Captains and the other 24 members are firefighters.
The department does a lot more than just firefighting, they also do extrication, ice rescue, woodland, etc…
Their coverage area includes Port Clyde, Clyde River, Upper Clyde, Villagedale, Baccaro, Barrington and all other areas in between.
Their department has a total of 5 trucks which are, tanker 41 which holds 2500 gallons of water and has a 420 GPM pump, pumper 42 which holds 1000 gallons of water and has a 1050 GPM pump, rescue 43 which is also known as their “Quick Response Vehicle”, utility 45 & tanker 46 which holds 2500 gallons of water and has a 1050 GPM pump.
As many know the largest forest fire in the history of Nova Scotia started within the departments fire district, the fire started above Barrington Lake near what is know as Homer’s Rock. The fire is currently contained thanks to the help of the Barrington/Port LaTour Fire Department, DNRR and numerous other fire departments.
